My name is Suzy. I’m not a greedy person but I am a curious person.
“Curious about food, culture and what other people put in their mouth” as my blog says.
I have been writing about eating out for over 7 years. 5 of them in Barcelona and previously in Berlin.
For me, eating out is the best way to get to know a city. I often go alone. I peek into the kitchen, I eavesdrop on the servers conversations, I watch the people eating around me. I feel my way along the afternoon until I pick up the faint pulse of a narrative.
And the food of course! I like to eat. (Quality not quantity). I like to contemplate a plate of food: flavour, composition, seasonality are all clues to the eventual story that I will relate to you.
I studied Art History in Paris but decided I couldn’t keep a straight face in the all too serious art world. I went on to get an MA in Marketing in London but found I didn’t want to help “sell” things and corporate life is not me. I had one of the first chains of English bookstores in Bucharest for a few years. Before becoming involved in bigger projects.
And then I tore up that life.
I started again re-training as a chef at Leiths School of Food and Wine. I worked in various kitchens in London, always at a basic position and salary. I made coffee at a posh deli in Primrose Hill (London), eventually going on to manage it for a couple of years. It was during this stint that I learned what a hard graft people in the food industry have and that the least you can do as a customer is “see” them and perhaps smile.
Despite the challenging aspects of working with food, I was hooked.
It’s been my portal into exploring Barcelona, contemplating people – just generally poking around into life.
I set out with an address of someplace to try and never know what the day will bring. Which is how I like things. I relish the unpredictability.
About Foodie in Barcelona…
I try to eat at a range of places: low, middle and high end. (High end suffers somewhat as I am a mother of 3 so my disposable income has taken a blow.)
This is a personal blog. It illustrates my likes and dislikes – it is an entirely subjective thing so you may find your taste is entirely different to mine.
I pay for my own meals. If I do accept an invitation for lunch – this will be clearly marked at the bottom of the blog post.
There are no hidden advertorials on my blog.
Lastly – if you have a favourite place you think I should visit send me an email at info(at)foodieinbarcelona.com
