The best burger in Barcelona isn’t in Barcelona. It’s in Sitges (a 40 minute drive out). Big Al’s, owned by Big Al (not an ironic nickname, he is a big man named Al) and his local partner. Not a business group who have fallen in love with the beautiful margin that minced meat between a bun can achieve. Two guys that know what they like and are committed to delivering that consistently to their clients.
The other day, I was asking Al how come there is no pickle? And he was saying that the supply on the market is erratic and he wouldn’t dream (nightmare) of serving up those tiny soft specimens along the cornichon line that are available here. So no pickle. What you get instead in the ‘small’ burger is 200g of meat- fashioned in to two, moist, savoury, juicy patties between the dreamiest brioche bun (baked especially for Al’s to his recipe locally). I mean this brioche bun could stand shoulder to shoulder with other leavened friends in Bouchon Bakery and be proud. Then there are the curly fries and a selection of American Sodas.
Oh and Edge craft beer on tap and great music, ironic music, loud music. Some men, undoubtedly the same ones who think it’s a good idea to plank on a lion, order the widow maker: a tower of meat that sends my arteries into spasms. There are also nachos, quesadillas, chicken wings and the like.
If you have a super elastic stomach, do it. But if you are hungry, preserve yourself and keep your appetite keen, go for the burger ( I favour the deluxe) and well – you will see what I mean.
This is Al’s second site and it is significantly bigger than the original place but on the weekends and in the summer, you will find a thick line before the doors even open for dinner at 8. So go for lunch if you can (but arrive at 1 when they open). And if that doesn’t work out, know this. The original site is reopening for the summer so there will be two Big Al’s in Sitges. And, and! Big Al’s is looking to open a third location in Barcelona. Once you’ve had a Big Al’s burger, everything else will pale in comparison. Which is probably why I will never write about another burger bar on this blog. Yup, I am that much of a fan.
