Sandwich fatigue is easy to succumb to in Barcelona. It starts early in the day, with the affordable breakfast bocadillo made of the ubiquitous par-cooked, finished on site, industrial white baguette that has never made anyone I know happy.
By the time lunch rolls around the last thing anyone wants is a sandwich. You are never far from a menu del dia but what about Asian? Plenty of sushi bars to choose from. More than a few Poke bowl joints. What if you want to get more specific? If you want Asian flavours, to skip the gluten and you want to eat with your hands? This small category is exactly where Pan Dan has positioned itself. Rice paper rolls, thick as a baby’s arm, stuffed with lots of rice vermicelli noodles, green things and a protein. Avocado, shrimp, and lettuce say or eggplant, red pepper, and spinach. You have your choice of sauces. If you are eating in – try them all: nuoc cham, soy, spicy & hoisin.
There are warm rolls too. I think I might prefer this version because they remind me of Cheung fun dim sum which I almost never manage to find. These require a knife and fork.
Dessert can be had in the form of a black sesame cake, a light green coloured pandan cake or a mango and tapioca pudding. (That one please).
Despite its fast-food format, care has been taken with the interior with a pretty dining room at the back. The front is occupied by a payment counter, against which Deliveroo bags are leaned and the open kitchen off to the left.
If you are up in this neck of the woods, Turó Park, this is one to try.
