Market to Table, Bear on Bike Food Tour, El Raval

26th April 2018 2 Comments

Alberto, one of the chefs, is truly passionate about his foodAvoiding La Boqueria market is kind of thing when you adopt Barcelona as your city. The tourists. The fruit pots. The rambutan, all year-long, as if we live in a tropical land. And it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. There are over 40 municipal markets in the city, just cross La Rambla to Via Laitana and you will find the undulating roof of Mercat Santa Caterina and a fraction of the tourists.

La Boqueria Market of Barcelona La Boqueria is where I head though, to meet Ella and Alberto who run the Bear on Bike Market to Table food tour. “We start from the back because the back of the market is more for locals.” They talk to us about the viability of the market. “This market still serves the best restaurants in the city. There are locals buying fish or meat but all the crates you see being wheeled out are restaurant bound.”  Alberto has a tuft of blossoming thyme jutting out of the back pocket of his backpack. “I bought this from Casa Petras, I was looking at the orders in his notebook and it was like a who’s who of Barcelona, starting with Tickets and carrying on.”

At La Boqueria market, learning where all the best stalls areWe meander through the market. Alberto shows us the best fish monger, points out the ones that rely on frozen stock. Picks up artichokes from the farmers market on the perimeter of the market. Jamon is bought for snacking later. Everything is for later, the Boqueria doesn’t lend itself to idling for long. When it seems like the market has reached human saturation (it’s a Saturday) we escape through the side and make our way through the Raval to the Espai Egg space where the class is held.

Learning how to cook artichokes at Espai EggThe menu is formulated to highlight seasonal, organic ingredients, showcase a variety of cooking methods and loosely sticking to Spanish traditions. Paella is something for people who enter via the front of the market, we’ve entered from the back so we begin by making Ajo Blanco. We prep artichokes and cook them in browned butter. Alberto shows us how to clean sardines and how to cook them and sweet tiger prawns from Tarragona on a searing griddle pan, salting the dry pan generously to create a nonstick effect.  Alberto even shows us a paupers method of cooking beef fillet sous vide.

Shrimp and hasselback potatoes, one of the beautiful dishes we made on Bear on Bike Food TourHalfway through the cooking, when our stomachs began yowling, Ella disappears and returns with snacks. Homemade sauerkraut, smoked butter, olives, cheese, serrano and Iberico ham with overflowing baskets of sourdough from Yellow Bakery. We don’t heed their warnings to leave room for the food.

Cooking together on Bear on Bike Food TourAbout 3 hours in, we sit down to our meal. We have all had a go at prepping the various ingredients and Alberto encourages us to plate our own dish of basil aioli, Hasselback potatoes, sardines, shrimp and gastrique sauce – compete with dill fronds and borage flowers. The rest of it is plated by Alberto and placed in front of us.

We shuffle out of the place sometime after 3, squinting at the sunlight and wondering if we will be able to manage dinner.

      Hi Sabine,
If they like to cook and won’t be disgusted by working with raw ingredients like sardines, then yes!

Had a banter with Abel from @colmado_giner who explained to me that Reus was the entry point for Vermut to enter Spain. I find myself retuning often to this town. With a population of around 100k (another Abel statistic) there are plenty of charming quality places to eat and drink.

Tarragona for me whenever I want to get nostalgic Tarragona for me whenever I want to get nostalgic about Barcelona. That and they have an inordinate amount of fantastic fish and Catalan restaurants like this one. @barquet_tarragona
In addition to these dishes - there were another 3 brown coloured plates. And though Instagram won’t reward us for it - brown is where the flavour is at.

Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a second visit — and it was just as good, if not better.
Greek-rooted, Barcelona-based cooking that’s thoughtful, balanced, and quietly confident.

I wrote about my first visit on the blog, and this follow-up felt like a confirmation rather than a comparison.
The orzo with prawns is as rich and flavourful as I remembered.
The berenjena with yogurt and pistachio still stands out for its contrast and texture.
The flor de calabacín is delicate and well-judged.
And the tulumba — light syrup, pistachio, and saffron cream — ends things beautifully. As a non-dessert dessert person Margarit is turning out to know exactly how to balance a sweet ending.

Reliable, elegant cooking in a calm and inviting space.

Some places feel like they’ve been frozen in tim Some places feel like they’ve been frozen in time—in the best way possible. 🪑🍽️

At Cal Pau Xich, it’s marble tabletops, bentwood chairs, Estrella bottles next to vintage motorbikes, and mirrors that whisper stories of another era.

The food? Honest and generous. Creamy mushroom lasagna. Chargrilled lamb chops with padron peppers. A silky flan with a dollop of cream that tastes like someone’s abuela still works the kitchen.

A proper Catalan gem that doesn’t fuss, just feeds you well.

Minimalist, confident, and just the right kind of cool. The kind of place where the coffee’s excellent, the croissants are glossy, and yes — they serve an iced coffee with olive oil.

Design-led, barista-driven, and packed to the rafters with oat milk. A must if you like your coffee with a bit of bite and a lot of style.
