Fan Curry Hacci Japanese Comfort Food, Gracia – CLOSED

28th June 2018 1 Comment

https://foodieinbarcelona.com/fan-shoronpo-japones-dumplings-and-noodles-gracia/CLOSED – The incongruity of the ugliness of Japanese comfort food next to, well just about everything else they eat, is curious. It looks like slop but smells divine.

Preparing food at Fan Hacci CurryI am at Fan Curry Hacci (a restaurant from Fan Shoronpo Japones just up the street)  for one reason only, to try the curry with rice.  It comes, brown on white, not even a parsley leaf to break the dullness, no carrot shaped like a flower. Brown and sticky curry gravy made up of a generous amount of caramelised onions.

The process of going from white, watery onion, from the acrid fumes that will stick to your clothes and hair like persistent burs, to something savoury and heady is best left to someone else.

Japanese Curry in Gracia This someone is the chef, perspiring, blue bandana and blue apron with a small Japanese flag on it, moving pans along a large range.
“He is the chef.” our server tells us. He has restaurant Fan Shoronpo Japones 20 years and now he opens this.”
(I love Fan Shoronpo, they make their own noodles which you can see displayed in the cabinet and they make gyoza to order.)

I am with Alina (Green Mama), she is a flexitarian but since Fan Curry Hacci Japanese have no fish dishes, she contents herself with a vegetable curry ramen. I am trying it before she has even had a go. It is, as expected, excellent.

Cutlery in the window

I’ve been shoveling the curry into my mouth, moving from chopsticks to a spoon to get the last dredges of the gravy. I push my plate away and stare absentmindedly at our server rolling out gyoza wrappers and filling them to order, just like at Shoronpo.

Fried food at Fan Curry Hacci JapaneseThere can’t be more than 10 seats in the place. An A4 paper is fluttering is taped to the outside wall, flapping in the breeze “TAKEAWAY”  The restaurant is due to open officially in one day, this is the soft opening with a lot of things on the menu not yet available. In spite of that, there is a steady inflow of patrons.

The place it going to be a hit. It mid June and 32 degrees and we are sweating happily over our Japanese curries, I can only imagine what it will be like in the cooler months.

Had a banter with Abel from @colmado_giner who explained to me that Reus was the entry point for Vermut to enter Spain. I find myself retuning often to this town. With a population of around 100k (another Abel statistic) there are plenty of charming quality places to eat and drink.

Tarragona for me whenever I want to get nostalgic Tarragona for me whenever I want to get nostalgic about Barcelona. That and they have an inordinate amount of fantastic fish and Catalan restaurants like this one. @barquet_tarragona
In addition to these dishes - there were another 3 brown coloured plates. And though Instagram won’t reward us for it - brown is where the flavour is at.

Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a second visit — and it was just as good, if not better.
Greek-rooted, Barcelona-based cooking that’s thoughtful, balanced, and quietly confident.

I wrote about my first visit on the blog, and this follow-up felt like a confirmation rather than a comparison.
The orzo with prawns is as rich and flavourful as I remembered.
The berenjena with yogurt and pistachio still stands out for its contrast and texture.
The flor de calabacín is delicate and well-judged.
And the tulumba — light syrup, pistachio, and saffron cream — ends things beautifully. As a non-dessert dessert person Margarit is turning out to know exactly how to balance a sweet ending.

Reliable, elegant cooking in a calm and inviting space.

Some places feel like they’ve been frozen in tim Some places feel like they’ve been frozen in time—in the best way possible. 🪑🍽️

At Cal Pau Xich, it’s marble tabletops, bentwood chairs, Estrella bottles next to vintage motorbikes, and mirrors that whisper stories of another era.

The food? Honest and generous. Creamy mushroom lasagna. Chargrilled lamb chops with padron peppers. A silky flan with a dollop of cream that tastes like someone’s abuela still works the kitchen.

A proper Catalan gem that doesn’t fuss, just feeds you well.

Minimalist, confident, and just the right kind of cool. The kind of place where the coffee’s excellent, the croissants are glossy, and yes — they serve an iced coffee with olive oil.

Design-led, barista-driven, and packed to the rafters with oat milk. A must if you like your coffee with a bit of bite and a lot of style.
