Colmado Casa Buendia, Grocers, Eixample

9th February 2016 Leave a Comment

Colmado Casa Buendia

I am in love with the shops opening up at this end of town, on the wrong side of the Arc de Triomf, up above the Estació del Nord. Once it was only Chinese shops (a pleasure for me) but most recently some wonderful independent shops have been opening.

Colmado Buendia

Like Colmado Casa Buendia, a gorgeous grocer’s specialising in all things Catalan and Spanish.
“What did you do before this?” I ask Susana, the shop owner.
“Oh – not this!” she replies.
That is clear enough, beautiful shops in which the value is customer orientated are rarely the offspring of someone who has been jaded by the industry.
“I worked in marketing, for a ski company – it was work. This is different, something I love. I did this because I thought if I don’t do it now I never will.”

Conserves at Colmado Casa Buendia

In Barcelona, your local supermarket is likely to stock wonderful products that you would have had to visit a specialist grocer to obtain at home. Oritz tuna sits nonchalantly next to supermarket own brand conserves. I want to scoop them all up and take them away to a more appropriate setting, not rubbing labels with the riff raff.  At Buendia, Susanna has found products and brands that show up even my beloved Oritz. Like Catrineta conserves (possibly the most beautifully packaged sardines I have ever seen?).

Dry goods at Colmado Buendia

There are canned Martinete tomatoes from Extremadura, who prefer to use organic varnish instead of the synthetic one common in the industry. Pretty Vermut bottles displayed on a table with bespoke plates made by Chichinabo. (Click on the link, you want these plates!). In the open fridge at the back: sausages, cheeses, yogurt – all local, all with a story.

Vermouth and bespoke plates

The care she has taken in sourcing these products, in celebrating the best and most beautiful that Spain has to offer is delightful. It makes me thing fondly of my days at Melrose and Morgan, where everything we sold was a triumph of some small holding or artisan producer. Susana has curated a wonderful shop at Colmado Casa Buendia. I urge you to visit it and see for yourself.

Tarragona for me whenever I want to get nostalgic Tarragona for me whenever I want to get nostalgic about Barcelona. That and they have an inordinate amount of fantastic fish and Catalan restaurants like this one. @barquet_tarragona
In addition to these dishes - there were another 3 brown coloured plates. And though Instagram won’t reward us for it - brown is where the flavour is at.

Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a second visit — and it was just as good, if not better.
Greek-rooted, Barcelona-based cooking that’s thoughtful, balanced, and quietly confident.

I wrote about my first visit on the blog, and this follow-up felt like a confirmation rather than a comparison.
The orzo with prawns is as rich and flavourful as I remembered.
The berenjena with yogurt and pistachio still stands out for its contrast and texture.
The flor de calabacín is delicate and well-judged.
And the tulumba — light syrup, pistachio, and saffron cream — ends things beautifully. As a non-dessert dessert person Margarit is turning out to know exactly how to balance a sweet ending.

Reliable, elegant cooking in a calm and inviting space.

Some places feel like they’ve been frozen in tim Some places feel like they’ve been frozen in time—in the best way possible. 🪑🍽️

At Cal Pau Xich, it’s marble tabletops, bentwood chairs, Estrella bottles next to vintage motorbikes, and mirrors that whisper stories of another era.

The food? Honest and generous. Creamy mushroom lasagna. Chargrilled lamb chops with padron peppers. A silky flan with a dollop of cream that tastes like someone’s abuela still works the kitchen.

A proper Catalan gem that doesn’t fuss, just feeds you well.

Minimalist, confident, and just the right kind of cool. The kind of place where the coffee’s excellent, the croissants are glossy, and yes — they serve an iced coffee with olive oil.
@holacoffee

Design-led, barista-driven, and packed to the rafters with oat milk. A must if you like your coffee with a bit of bite and a lot of style.

@casajuliomadrid : a crimson-clad portal to proper @casajuliomadrid : a crimson-clad portal to proper old-school Madrid.
Tomato salad dripping in oil, oversized croquetas, garlicky chistorra with golden potatoes, a cold caña, and just enough chaos behind the bar to feel alive.
No fusion. No foam. Just flavor.
