J.K. Indian Supermarket Barcelona, El Raval

J.K. Asian Supermarket

Indian Supermarket Barcelona

I listened to Padma Lakshmi on Cherry Bombe Heritage Radio (If you love food and champion women – you will enjoy these podcasts.) Her words about her life in India were so evocative that I bought her autobiography: Love, Loss and What We Ate.  And only then realised that she was the model that was married to Salman Rushdie and presented America’s Top Chef. It turns out that wading through the tribulations of becoming a successful model? Not so interesting but when she begins to write about food, especially Indian food, I’m hooked.

With my belly leading the way, I headed for the Raval to J.K. Indian Supermarket Barcelona. Knowing that somewhere among the phone shops (why are there so many phone shops?) I would find an Indian grocer. Carrer de Sant Pau my friend Sarah and Anjalina both told me.

More Dal than you could ever hope for at J.K. Indian Supermarket Barcelona

I stepped into J.K. Indian Supermarket Barcelona to find the owner, Harshat, stocking shelves.
“Is this the best Indian grocers in Barcelona?”
“Yes. 32 years we are here.” He smiled.
“Good. I thought so. Can I take pictures?”
“Yes, of course, please.” A bewildered Harshat answered.

I asked for fresh curry leaves, they didn’t have those but they had frozen ones. I picked up my Asafoetida, bags of fragrant rice, packets of papadams, jars of chutneys. Even sachets of savoury porridge.

I amassed a large hoard in twenty minutes which I took over to the till. Harshat was talking out loud to a handset propped on the till. He took my 50 euro bill and waved it in front of the phone. The two men in the handset laughed at the big bill.

Fresh produce at J.K. Indian Supermarket BarcelonaI peered over the checkout counter “Conference call?” I asked, waving to two moustachioed men, sitting under a tree.
“Yes, my family. In India.”

It got me thinking, about Lakshmi, whose mother emigrated to America after an unsuccessful marriage and subsequent divorce made living in India untenable. And Harshat, here in Barcelona. Or Hawa Hassan who escaped the civil war in Somalia lived apart from her mother for 15 years and as an adult set up Basbaas. Those that didn’t have the privilege of starting from a level playing field and yet still made it. Those stories are incredible and worth hearing.

📍Batea Barcelona — Gran Via, 605 Michelin 202 📍Batea Barcelona — Gran Via, 605
Michelin 2025 recommended and absolutely deserved.

Between the Betanzos tortilla drowning in prawn head jus and the delicately plated ceviche, Batea balances tradition with a polished, confident creativity. It’s seafood-forward but far from predictable.

Highlights:
🦐 Tortilla with prawns
🥒 Flawless ceviche
🥖 Bread + algae butter = don’t skip it
🌿 Falafel of algae & bluefin tuna (!)

Their design nods to the nostalgic brasseries of old, but this is very much Barcelona now. Grab a table. Order generously.

Contracorrent Bistró has a new (ish) spot in Grà Contracorrent Bistró has a new (ish) spot in Gràcia. A melding of Catalan and Italian flavours and a focus on ingredients. As highlighted by the row of vines from the family estate that are suspended from the ceiling.
The choice is between two tasting menus. Of course my friend and I selected the largest one!
A flurry of small plates and bowls ensued. Just the way I like it, lots of variety but I didn’t have to waddle out of there.
The warm and knowledgeable service was the cherry on top.

I feel like the one coffee shop per block thing ha I feel like the one coffee shop per block thing has been done ad nauseam - instead I would like to petition for one cheese shop per block. Found this darling one on the corner from one of my favourite restaurants.
What about you? Do you think we have reached peak coffee shop saturation in the city?

And the Mitake mushroom but with way more colour then this picture - I hadn’t realized that apricot panna cotta is what’s missing from my life - (not pictured because the best moments often aren’t captured.)
