Brunch in Barcelona has never been better than it is right now. The last year has seen a flurry of new Brunch Places in Barcelona. And while the city had its fair share of brunch joints previously, these new brunch places set themselves apart through well-designed interiors, all day kitchens and well-curated and executed dishes.
Funky Bakers Eatery
Carrer Bailen 61, Eixample (funkybakers.com)
Funky Bakers started as a tiny corner shop in El Born before expanding to this great location. The new Funky Bakers is a delicatessen on one corner, complete with English cookbooks and armfuls of flowers and a restaurant off to the side. A sizeable light-filled space with exposed brick walls. The large kitchen is visible through a glass wall. There is a central table loaded with freshly baked pastries and cakes. Funky Bakers serves the usual avocado toast, but the owner’s Turkish roots show up in some of the dishes, including the delightful challah with three mezze.
Gringa All Day
Carrer Trafalgar 39 (www.gringa.es)
The Gringa brand started out as a food truck, before moving onto a permanent location in the Raval with a taco joint in the L.A. tradition. 2022 saw the opening of an All Day brunch spot on the rapidly evolving Trafalgar street. A gorgeous space with plush red banquettes in the window and Formica tables. Chicken and waffles appear here, too, as do a stack of pancakes with eggs, bacon and maple syrup. The coffee cups are sinched in the middle, all the better for you to nurse it all afternoon.
Fat Schmuck (CLOSED)
Plaça d’Emili Vendrell, Raval (www.fatschmuck.com)
Part of a group started with Two Schmucks bar on the dirty but always attractive Joaquin Costa street in the Raval. Fat Schmuck overlooks a small square in the Raval. The restaurant terrace has been spruced up with lights and potted plants and Raval life unfolds in front of you. Fat Schmuck does its take on the American brunch. This is the place to have spicy fried chicken wedged between triangles of waffles. The cocktails are delicious.
Hardware Société – CLOSED
Carrer de Valencia 193, Eixample (www.hardwaresociete.com/barcelona)
By way of Melbourne and then Paris, Hardware Societe is one of the more sophisticated brunch spots to open in Barcelona. Eggs Benedict is served on a charcoal hued brioche bun, and the hollandaise sauce is spot on. I am partial to the cotton candy pink and green colour palette used indoors and the ceramic cups they serve their flat whites in. If you love what you’ve eaten, they have their cookbook on sale.
The Egg Lab
Carrer de Sepúlveda, 80 (www.the-egglab.com)
The Egg Lab has a warm caramel coloured interior, with the rounded corners of the coffee bar and a tumble of lights over the bar. The windows open upwards onto the street like retro flip-up sunglasses. It’s unapologetically about eggs here, with pancakes thrown in to appease those with a sweet tooth.
