Gaby’s Best Wine Bars Barcelona

15th November 2023 Leave a Comment

Wine Fantasy Gabby doing what she does best!

Best Wine Bars Barcelona

Gabby is a true wine enthusiast with roots deep in the vineyards of South Africa with its incredible hospitality and world-renowned wines, it was the ideal place for her journey to begin. After work or on weekends, the vineyards were easily accessible, creating a deep connection to the land and its wines. She then moved to Canada where she completed the Wine and Spirits Education Trust and the Wine Scholar Guild and became an Italian Wine Ambassador. Next came Barcelona and one year ago Wine Fantasy Barcelona was born. Here Gabby offers private wine tours that are held in the vineyards with access to private cellars and food pairings as well as bespoke events.

Barcelona is deservedly famous for its food and lifestyle, adjacent to that it has an ever-growing list of incredible wine bars, from the old-fashioned Bodegas to bars that serve only Natural wines. We’ve invited Gabby over to share her favourites in her own words!

A selection of tapas at Bar del Pla including the shaved raw mushrooms and thumb-sized croquetas.

Bar del Pla
C/ de Montcada, 2, El Born 08003
www.bardelpla.cat/
Bar del Pla announces it’s a fun place with the T-shirts their servers wear declaring: “Fuck Sangria, drink Natural Wine!” Nestled in the hustle and bustle of El Born it is reliably packed no matter the season. The beauty of Barcelona is that these TOP spots are TOP for a reason. Bar del Pla has been a leader in Natural wines by the glass and seasonal food for as long as it has existed. This place is hearty, noisy and just awesome. I recommend you start with a Riesling from Catalonia, followed by a glass of Rosé from Loxarel Vineyards in nearby Penedès. Long before Natural wine was cool, Loxarel was doing its thing. Definitely, a  producer to follow up on or get in touch with me, we can go and visit.
Foodie in Barcelona wrote about Bar del Pla here in April 2017.

Bocanariz
C/ de Vallfogona, 12, Gracia 08012
bocanariz.barcelona/
Nestled in the heart of Gracia, Bocanariz is the quintessential wine lover’s haven, where charm, tranquillity, and romance come together. Great for weeknight date nights, offering a cosy atmosphere and a beautiful interior that sets the stage for a memorable evening.
What sets BocaNariz apart is its remarkable collection of luxurious wines by the glass. Recently crowned “Bar of the Week” by the renowned Penin Wine Publication, BocaNariz is a true connoisseur’s paradise.
They encourage their patrons to explore and enjoy the unfamiliar. Like a glass of Mencia from the north, or an orange wine.
Their charcuterie boards are culinary works of art perfect to accompany their wine.

Bodega Solera
C/ de Còrsega, 339, 08037, Gràcia
instagram.com/bodegasolera
Bodega Solera is a newcomer to Gràcia. Its distinctly green-hued doors make it hard to miss. Opened by Kim Díaz of Bar Mut fame, Bodega Solara is like a step back in time. The bar is Beautiful with a capital B. Even so, it’s the wine that wows – they have 650 wines on their list. All are carefully curated and explained on the wine list which lightens the onus of picking a bottle you will like. Solera is conceived as if it is opened by an Andalusian family, with their specific influences. They serve small plates of cheese, jamón, Russian Salad, chorizo, and sardines. The staff are truly knowledgable and friendly, another reason I love this place. After a recent trip to Jerez, Bodega Solara is my go-to when I need some much-needed Southern hospitality.

Els Tres Porquets
Rambla del Poblenou, 165, 08018
www.elstresporquets.es
Tres Porquets means three little pigs. It’s a bar that has a great wine list and delicious food. The food here is traditional Catalan.
Tres Porquets values traditional cuisine, the flavours that our parents and grandparents cherished, at this wine bar you can expect excellent dishes and hearty tapas with all ingredients sourced locally.
My most memorable dish was mushrooms, egg and foie. We loved the octopus and tried a delicious seared roast beef.  This meal is not a meal without a serving of pan con tomate and dessert. The traditional bread pudding, a Catalan version of pain perdu (deep-fried bread) with ice cream is dreamy.
A memorable Wine and Dining experience, I highly recommend it.

A couple of oysters at Extra Bar in Gràcia

Extra Bar
C/ del Torrent de l’Olla, 79, Gracia 08012
instagram.com/extra_bar
Extra Bar has my heart, it is a trendy neighbourhood bar, always packed with people. The window seat is my pick. Here it’s guaranteed that there will be something extra special (pun intended) in your glass. Extra focus on what is trendy while serving classics such as Priorat Reds and Riesling by the glass. As you would expect from the offspring of La Pubilla, food is Catalan fare but updated with top-notch ingredients. The Russian salad and the croquetas are my go-to’s.
(Foodie Barcelona wrote about Extra Bar here in April 2019)

Hermós Fish Bar from Alexis Peñalver, chef/owner of La Pubilla de Gràcia.

Hermós Bar de Peix
Plaça de la Llibertat, 08012 Gràcia
instagram.com/hermosbardepeix
Hermós Bar de Peix opened recently
in the Mercat de la Llibertat of Gràcia. It shares a counter with a fishmongers , a testament to the proximity and freshness of it’s ingredients. Its Chef / Owner is that of La Pubilla and Alexis is known for his rice dishes. A must try, if not here then across the street at La Pubilla.
Edu, is the brains behind the wine list. He is a charming enthusiastic and knowledgeable wine guy, with years of Sommelier experience, he’s got you covered by the glass and bottle. He loves to change up the wine list so be prepared for surprises.
I would start with the oysters, start with two! They pair well with Ancestral a light and refreshing type of old-school sparkling wine. The seared tuna belly is gorgeous and mussels in (what else) white wine will have you mopping up every last daub. Rose is a good follow up – I do suggest you let Edu be your guide here.

La Vinya del Seynor at dusk in El Born Barcelona

La Vinya del Senyor
Plaça de Santa Maria, 5, 08003 El Born
lavinyadelsenyor.es
I send everyone to La Vinya del Senyor. Its premium location in front of the gothic church Santa Maria del Mar is an extra delight alongside an incredible selection of its supercharged wines-by-the-glass list that comes complete with rare Vintages, Sherry Wines and Champagne which changes at two-week intervals. As accompaniments, they do a selection of cheeses, olives, and tinned fish, the old-school way.

Slices of delectable Mortadella at Monocrom Wine Bar

Monocrom
Pl. de Cardona, 4, 08006 Sarrià -Sant Gervasi – close to Gracia
www.monocrom.wine
Monocrom is a lovely modern Wine Bar. It’s great for couples and groups of friends. I love the outside tables in the small quiet placeta in this charming upscale neighbourhood. They offer excellent wines by the glass and rotate delicious wines from around the world. They concentrate on an extensive list of Catalan, French and Italian wines. I suggest at least two perhaps an orange and a Trepat, a lighter style of red wine in Catalonia and a must-try if available by the glass. Do try the Mortadella and the tongue.

The charcuterie fridge at Vila Viniteca at their original El Born location.

Vila Viniteca
C/ dels Agullers, 7, 08003 El Born º Av. Diagonal, 557 08029
https://www.vilaviniteca.es/
Welcome to one of the most important, oldest and largest wine distributors of fine wine in Europe. Currently 3rd generation awesomeness. Sometimes it is hard to comprehend the magnitude of Vila Viniteca. They are a powerful company but also hold a key to some of the best wines you can try and buy in Barcelona. Everybody who works for Vila Viniteca is well-educated and passionate about wine. They have 2 prime locations where you can buy and try wine by the glass, the concept is a modern wine store and wine bar combined with luxury cheese and charcuterie from around the world, they are professionals. When it comes to sitting in their bars, expect a comprehensive selection of wine by the glass, even Champagne. From Stemware to Staff, Vila Viniteca is king. I encourage you to allow your professional server at one of the Vila Viniteca locations to make you a Charcuterie or Cheese. Don’t forget to order the pan con tomate, which is served on pa de vidre from the old wood-fired bakery, Vila Mala, across from their El Born shop.
(Foodie in Barcelona wrote about Vila Viniteca here in July 2017.)

There are a few other wine bars that I know I will love but haven’t got around to trying. These are Masa Vins in Poblenou and Garage

I hope you enjoyed my blog post on the Best Wine Bars in Barcelona. Wine by glass in Barcelona is extremely popular and we have so much amazing wine in the region of Catalonia, that it is in our favour to drink by the glass. However, not all Bars are created equal and the ones I have included above truly stand out for me!.

Cheers xxx WFB

Contracorrent Bistró has a new (ish) spot in Grà Contracorrent Bistró has a new (ish) spot in Gràcia. A melding of Catalan and Italian flavours and a focus on ingredients. As highlighted by the row of vines from the family estate that are suspended from the ceiling.
The choice is between two tasting menus. Of course my friend and I selected the largest one!
A flurry of small plates and bowls ensued. Just the way I like it, lots of variety but I didn’t have to waddle out of there.
The warm and knowledgeable service was the cherry on top.

I feel like the one coffee shop per block thing ha I feel like the one coffee shop per block thing has been done ad nauseam - instead I would like to petition for one cheese shop per block. Found this darling one on the corner from one of my favourite restaurants.
What about you? Do you think we have reached peak coffee shop saturation in the city?
