Espai Joliu Coffee is kind of like boyfriend jeans. Just a matter of grabbing the trousers closest to hand, your boyfriend’s and out you go effortlessly cool. Except boyfriend jeans are close to impossible to pull off. What do you wear on top? Heels to combat the largeness of it all? And haimakeupake up need to be impeccable to offset the grunge.
So too with Espai Joliu Coffee. It looks like they moved in yesterday, didn’t bother with the walls, used some hangers to display illustrations on. Not forgetting a central table of small succulents in similarly small pots. The ‘impeccable hair’ comes in the form of a La Marzocco machine (these retail at around 7k). The coffee they serve is Nomad. You can have a cup with a gluten-free buckwheat chocolate chip cookie. There is a large Kilner jar with a tap, a middle slice of orange and some leaves.
Boyfriend jeans and this space – not effortless. Lucia Lopez – a slim young woman with a bob and an appetite for stripped shirts seemingly larger than my own, spent 8 months in Berlin. As a former resident, I can see the overlap in aesthetic and in reading material on sale (DRIFT, Cereal, Kinfolk).
This is space filled with nooks you want to disappear into, beautiful handmade objects to covet and free wi-fi to help you pass the time once you have soaked in the loveliness of it all.
At the centre of it – coffee.
