Oh, Federal Cafe Barcelona is good-looking!
The original Federal in Sant Antoni is attractive but the new Federal in El Barri Gotic is like that guy from the “11:30 Diet Coke Break Commercial” (that was from 1995? Hair looked like that in 1995?) Ridiculously good-looking. It should be on some on a promotional poster for a more upmarket Barcelona: “Barcelona not just for hen parties also for people who wear New Balance and drink Flat Whites”.
Federal Cafe Barcelona is on such a prime piece of real estate, just off the Rambla down by the Colom end and there is plenty of it, circling around a central kitchen clad extruded bricks. As always, there are various seating formats to choose from- the most popular seems to be straddling the window ledge.
The menu dates to roughly the same period like the Diet Coke commercial. It’s a cafe menu, sandwiches, salads, one pasta dish, one rice dish, one chicken dish – 5 hamburgers (one made out of kangaroo). I am not sure what to order? Pasta? Places that list only one pasta dish are unlikely to cook it properly. Burger – I’m going through a spot of burger fatigue. I order a bacon sandwich with avocado, tomato and an extra fried egg, it’s akin to ordering a club sandwich from room service, most people can get it right. It’s served on some crusty bread it’s perfectly fine. Looking around the place, most people’s food looks fine.
The look of Federal Cafe Barcelona though. The abundance of space. Love it. And they use fresh (non UHT) milk in their coffee.

Barcelona has been living a bar-restaurant-culinary revolution since several years and all that make it more beautiful in this matter. Federal café in Parlament street was one of the first good-looking bars stablished in the city. It’s good to know it has been “duplicated” in this quiet and peaceful spot.

We had an early dinner at their original spot in Sant Antoni the other night. The fish and chips was huge but sadly mediocre. The lamington however made it worth the visit. Nice spot though! Will try the better looking guy next time for a coffee/cake stop.
