I will breakfast and I will lunch. Brunch, not so much. The crowds, the surcharge on my eggs. The inevitable “Ok, so now what’s for lunch?”
When Granja Petitbo Brunch opened 3 years ago the fanfare was such that I deemed visiting not worth it.
Then one Monday, I found myself walking around with my Mac and half a dozen unfinished posts and I thought “Aha! What better time to nurse a coffee and have a leisurely breakfast and nail down these posts.”
Except at Granja Petit Bo – there is no Wifi.
I quickly see why: they are too rammed with hungry customers who have come to eat as opposed to bloggers on a 5 euro ticket (“coffee and tap water please”)
Petit Bo has a lot of those customers that Ana Colau and citizens of Barcelona are protesting about. However there are plenty of Catalan speakers. Young and old. The Catalan men stick to their typical breakfast of a cortado (1.3) and a croissant. The younger Catalan crowd goes for cafe con leche (1.9) , large tartines and glasses of fresh pressed juices.
The foreigners tend to go for the big-ticket items, over the 10 euro threshold. The German next to me is eating from an aluminium platter piled high with scrambled eggs (5) and mushrooms (1.5). His girlfriend orders pancakes (5) and fruit with greek yogurt (3.5). When they go, the young woman who takes their place orders Turkish eggs (10) which come in a rectangular enamel dish, with bread stacked up against it’s side, on a wooden board.
During my (extended – I decide to write my posts offline – HA!) stay, the doorway is adorned with customers waiting for a table, sweeping their eyes over the tables to see who is nearing the end of their large plates. I’ve just ordered a tea and it’s too hot to drink so I have another 20 minutes at least.
They’ve got a great space though. Distressed peeling walls, 5 meter ceilings, a map of Europe adorning one wall, clusters of lights dangling, some tables embellished with vases of flowers. Service is swift. Food seems consistent. Little wonder then that among the brunchers – this is such a popular destination.
