La Catrina Barcelona, Mexican, Eixample

1st September 2015 4 Comments

La Catrina

Do you know that dream where you find an extra room in your house? Well. Barcelona and South American food. Even Barcelona and Mexican food. So many rooms you didn’t know were there. I mean restaurants. This is the 4th Mexican I am writing about on this blog. All I can say is: “Welcome to the party La Catrina Barcelona!”

Calaveras at La Catrina

They’ve got 7 tacos. Beef tongue among them (€10). I had Carnitas (€10). They came with a dollop of guacamole on one end and one of salsa on the other, adorned with crispy chicharrones. I had my pick of 4 salsas: salsa verde, salsa roja, something labeled ‘medium’ and another ‘hot’. My waitress, Dulce, advised me to go for the cochinita pibil next time I visit. (Duly noted Dulce)

Carnitas at La Catrina

I sat in the front, across from the bar and watched The Simpsons in Spanish with the sound off while the Black Eyed Peas blared from the speakers above my head. Having backpacked through Mexico (many moons ago), I found this authentic as opposed to annoying. There is a huge back room with sit down tables covered in brightly coloured Mexican oilcloths under fluorescent lights – this too, I found to be the real deal but probably not a place you want to go for a romantic dinner.

La Catrina

As I was paying Dulce told me about Sunday. On Sunday, the Pastor and Suadero taco are only 1 Euro so the place gets rammed. That is when you call and reserve. You will not be disappointed.

Don’t miss “El Tianguis” for another delicious mexican restaurant. Try “Camarones a la diabla”.

Cochinita pibil. Chochinita would be…something else. 🙂
