La Seu Cheese Shop, Barri Gotic

4th May 2015 2 Comments

La Seu Formatgeria

I walked into La Seu Cheese shop with a friend that likes to Instagram. Before her phone could make its artificial ‘click’ – Catherine came out. “Ah” she cautioned “you can only take a picture if you ask nicely.” We both searched her face to see if she was being funny in a ha-ha way or the other way. We both came away empty, her face was inscrutable.

La Seu cheese shop

Whichever way the conversation was going to go – us being thrown out on our backsides or managing to coax some cheese out of the woman – I decided I liked this woman.

La Seu Cheese shop has been there for 14 years, in an old butter making factory, that drips with character. In her cold room, Catherine has a collection of Spanish cheeses. We pepper her with questions, she’s worked at Neal’s Yard Dairy and at some point tried to bring over English cheeses before deciding it wasn’t worth the hassle and focusing on local fare.

Small cheese sampler

We order a sample of cheese and a Vermut to have at the bar (€3). It comes on something that looks like a ceramic paint palette with a hole for your thumb and a hole for the glass of Vermut. Sheep, cows and goats cheese – delicious. Prompts me to order some cheese from home.

Map or cheese

A process that gets interrupted over a period of 15 minutes as ‘regulars’ come in and Catherine goes directly to their favourites and cuts out what their habitual quantity is. “Just let me take care of them, I know what they want.”

The whole time we are there she deadpans – “There is a new shop opening across the street, he’ll be surprised when he realizes that this isn’t Passeig de Gracia.”

Cheese to go from La Seu

She is extremely discriminating about her customers. She would like to avoid time wasters. The “Oh, look! It’s so pretty! Let me waste your time, take pictures to post on my social media feed and then go off empty-handed to the Boqueria where I will waste their time and probably just leave with one of those (infernal) juices.”

I mean? Who does want to deal with that? Go there to eat or buy cheese. It’s good. Full stop.

Lol, good description of how Catherine is. I’ve known her pretty much since she opened the shop and she is awesome… If you are wise enough to respect her rules. Well, after all, the shop is pretty small and it’s “her” place, so she sets the rules.
Not enough room for too many people taking pictures (specially the ones snapping the flash at her face without warning): so she’ll just keep the well behaved ones and of course clients spending money will always be her priority (it’s a shop, not a museum!).
She’s Scottish, and like us Catalans, we don’t make friends quickly but if you take the time to deepen the relationship (and follow her rules!) she’s a good ally.

Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a Returned to Restaurant Margarit in Poble-sec for a second visit — and it was just as good, if not better.
Greek-rooted, Barcelona-based cooking that’s thoughtful, balanced, and quietly confident.

I wrote about my first visit on the blog, and this follow-up felt like a confirmation rather than a comparison.
The orzo with prawns is as rich and flavourful as I remembered.
The berenjena with yogurt and pistachio still stands out for its contrast and texture.
The flor de calabacín is delicate and well-judged.
And the tulumba — light syrup, pistachio, and saffron cream — ends things beautifully. As a non-dessert dessert person Margarit is turning out to know exactly how to balance a sweet ending.

Reliable, elegant cooking in a calm and inviting space.

At Cal Pau Xich, it’s marble tabletops, bentwood chairs, Estrella bottles next to vintage motorbikes, and mirrors that whisper stories of another era.

The food? Honest and generous. Creamy mushroom lasagna. Chargrilled lamb chops with padron peppers. A silky flan with a dollop of cream that tastes like someone’s abuela still works the kitchen.

A proper Catalan gem that doesn’t fuss, just feeds you well.

Minimalist, confident, and just the right kind of cool. The kind of place where the coffee’s excellent, the croissants are glossy, and yes — they serve an iced coffee with olive oil.

Design-led, barista-driven, and packed to the rafters with oat milk. A must if you like your coffee with a bit of bite and a lot of style.

Tomato salad dripping in oil, oversized croquetas, garlicky chistorra with golden potatoes, a cold caña, and just enough chaos behind the bar to feel alive.

📍Batea Barcelona — Gran Via, 605 Michelin 202 📍Batea Barcelona — Gran Via, 605
Michelin 2025 recommended and absolutely deserved.

Between the Betanzos tortilla drowning in prawn head jus and the delicately plated ceviche, Batea balances tradition with a polished, confident creativity. It’s seafood-forward but far from predictable.

Highlights:
🦐 Tortilla with prawns
🥒 Flawless ceviche
🥖 Bread + algae butter = don’t skip it
🌿 Falafel of algae & bluefin tuna (!)

Their design nods to the nostalgic brasseries of old, but this is very much Barcelona now. Grab a table. Order generously.
