Chi Nanit Chinese, Shanghai Cuisine, Gràcia

2nd January 2019 4 Comments

The pass at Chi Nanit ChineseThere used to be a restaurant called Nanit off the Passeig de Gracia on Balmes. It was a loud semi-basement space with a woman who made dumplings in the window facing the street. It wasn’t cheap but it was Chinese food just off the Passeig de Gracia with excellent dumplings. It closed suddenly with no forwarding address.

More than a year passed before it re-opened under the name Chi-Nanit Chinese, on one of those quiet streets in Gràcia. The space could not be more different. If it weren’t for the tables demarcating the space as a restaurant – it could be a minimalist aesthetic salon. Where they suck stuff out or freeze your face into an expression of fixed serenity.

Tea service at Chi Nanit ChineseThere is a long bar as you walk in, with a wall filled with all manner of teapots. This turns out to be relevant later. We order the Jasmine tea which is served with little handless tea cups, slightly bigger than a thimble. We ask for water until the tea itself is no more than coloured hot water. And then for a fresh pot. It’s good enough that Marwa asks where she can buy it.
“It’s probably from China. She brings everything from China. All the plates, she brought.” Sarah who has eaten here on numerous occasions tells us
The waiter inquiries for us and sure enough, it can not be found in Barcelona.

Ju Mai makes the dumplings to order. The rest of the dishes are made by Quim.

We have a lot of dumplings. Shrimp shaomai (5.75€), vegetable shaomai (4.75€) and Xiaolongbao. There is a dish of noodles with a meat sauce and potatoes (I love a bit of starch on starch) that tastes like a Chinese beef bolognese with a generous dash of vinegar (Campesina 7.25€). We have the Chi Nanit fried rice (9.95€). I insist on the dish of tofu and am glad I insisted. Instead of the usual soy, it’s the vinegar that seems to accent most of the dishes, particularly the tofu.

The food has a homemade taste about it. Not that I’ve ever had a Chinese person invite me over for dinner. But I imagine that this is what it would taste like.

Hey Suzy, how interesting, I always wondered what happened to this place, I thought it rather quirky when I visited way back then. In fact it was only yesterday I was looking at photos i´d taken of the lady in the window hand crafting those dumplings. It`s nice to know they had a plan and didn´t disappear into the abyss.

I’m planning a trip to Barcelona with friends in April, so I’m happy to read about good food. The last time I was in BCN for 10 days I was disappointed in the sameness and relatively blandness of most of the tapas places where I ate lunch and dinner. One of my friends is a chef, and all three of us are foodies. I’m looking forward to exploring your blog.

Hi Karstin. There are a lot of places shaking things up and moving away from the local palate. Try Direkte Boqueria, Santa Gula or Gula Bar, Hetta, Fismuler to name a few.

📍Batea Barcelona — Gran Via, 605 Michelin 202 📍Batea Barcelona — Gran Via, 605
Michelin 2025 recommended and absolutely deserved.

Between the Betanzos tortilla drowning in prawn head jus and the delicately plated ceviche, Batea balances tradition with a polished, confident creativity. It’s seafood-forward but far from predictable.

Highlights:
🦐 Tortilla with prawns
🥒 Flawless ceviche
🥖 Bread + algae butter = don’t skip it
🌿 Falafel of algae & bluefin tuna (!)

Their design nods to the nostalgic brasseries of old, but this is very much Barcelona now. Grab a table. Order generously.

Contracorrent Bistró has a new (ish) spot in Grà Contracorrent Bistró has a new (ish) spot in Gràcia. A melding of Catalan and Italian flavours and a focus on ingredients. As highlighted by the row of vines from the family estate that are suspended from the ceiling.
The choice is between two tasting menus. Of course my friend and I selected the largest one!
A flurry of small plates and bowls ensued. Just the way I like it, lots of variety but I didn’t have to waddle out of there.
The warm and knowledgeable service was the cherry on top.

I feel like the one coffee shop per block thing ha I feel like the one coffee shop per block thing has been done ad nauseam - instead I would like to petition for one cheese shop per block. Found this darling one on the corner from one of my favourite restaurants.
What about you? Do you think we have reached peak coffee shop saturation in the city?
